NEW HISTORY OF MACAU

Since the opening of the East-West Institute for Advanced Studies (EWIAS), in 2012,

one of its major research projects has been the systematic inventory of worldwide historical

sources for the History of Macau, an international investigation launched in 2014 up to 2025.

International Sources for Macau History Website researches in foreign archives, libraries, museums, and other institutions throughout Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia,

except in Macau itself, Portugal and Peoples’ Republic of China

whose institutions' historical collections are already well-known or

under inventory promoted by other research organizations.

Coordinated by Prof. Ivo Carneiro de Sousa and Prof. Richard Whitfield, gathering researchers from different nationalities and geographies, the Institute has already provided detailed inventories of historical repositories from public and private archives, libraries and museums from Brazil, France, Spain, the Netherlands, and the UK. These inventories also offer original historical collections and documents as well as historiography resources.

EWIAS hopes that this Website can become the leading provider of world materials for a New History of Macau able to enhance the singular role of the

former Sino-Portuguese enclave in the history of the world

connecting continents, economies, and cultures.

Worldwide inventory of sources
for the history of Macau

This website is organized by country and within each country by public and private institutions and their respective collections.

Souces are displayed in chronological and alphabetical order.

Other than detailed inventories this Website aims to systematically lodge the historical documents held by the respective institutions, reproduced with the legal authorization of their public and private owners, thus enhancing researchers and students' direct access to the unique history of Macau and its world impact from 16th to 20th century.
